Sugar = dental decay. Or so, that is a common public and professional perception.

But sugar is now being replaced by all sorts of sweeteners, both natural and artificial.

So what effect do these sweeteners have on promoting cavities?

Two recent studies indicate:
stevia, sucralose, saccharin and aspartame are better than sugar in reducing acid production by S. mutans
fructose (high-fructose corn syrup or HFCS) was worse than sugar

But consider this.

Those yummy blueberry muffins at Tim Horton’s? They contain both sugar and HFCS (and a whopping 330 calories per muffin!)

And then consider this.

Studies are now reporting that artificial sweeteners may also disrupt the body’s blood sugar controls. So suggesting to your older adults to substitute sweeteners for sugar, may not be the good for their pre-diabetic condition.
